Artists Place Setting
You will make a 5 piece place setting with the shape and surface design in the style of a chosen artist. The artist can work in any medium – painting, sculpting, architecture, photography, etc. You can copy specific artworks (like paint an artwork on a plate) or work in the style of the artist. You can also choose an historical style that is not a particular artist (i.e. Ming Dynasty porcelain, Egyptian tomb painting).
1. Start by researching artists and artworks. Look at these sites:
the-artists.org/, and
http://www.artchive.com/ftp_site.htm and any other sites that will help you.
2. Once you have chosen your artist, draw a design for the place settings, including their shape and their surface design. You can choose an individual artist, OR an artistic style (i.e. classical greek sculpture, Ming Dynasty porcelain, etc.) Show me your designs when you are ready to start.
3. You can use any clay techniques to make them – wheel, slab, coil, pinch, etc. Their shape can be modified in anyway, and you can add sculpted parts to them. The separate pieces should go together as one unified work.
4. All pieces should be glazed. You can use under glaze, gloss glaze, or a combination. Remember, you can build up glazes in layers and fire them in between.
